Narrative review highlights improved skin quality in periorbital region, indicating new strategies for blepharoplasty.
Introduction: Lower blepharoplasty addresses functional and aesthetic concerns related to the lower eyelids. However, the periorbital region's skin quality significantly influences postoperative outcomes and patient satisfaction. Recent advances in dermatological therapies provide adjuvant options to enhance skin texture, pigmentation, and elasticity in patients undergoing lower eyelid surgery. Objective: To review and analyze complementary dermatological strategies used to improve periorbital skin quality in patients undergoing lower blepharoplasty. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Studies published in the last five years evaluating dermatological interventions combined with or following lower blepharoplasty were included. Emphasis was placed on clinical outcomes, histological improvements, safety, and integration into surgical protocols. Results and Discussion: Multiple techniques, including laser resurfacing, microneedling, chemical peels, topical retinoids, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), have demonstrated enhancing efficacy in periorbital skin quality. These interventions support collagen remodeling, reduce dyschromia, and complement the mechanical correction provided by surgery. Challenges include patient selection, treatment timing, and potential for adverse effects, which require individualized multidisciplinary planning. Conclusion: Integrating dermatological therapies with surgical blepharoplasty offers promising results in improving periorbital aesthetic outcomes. Further clinical trials are needed to optimize protocols and define evidence-based guidelines.
