Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid advancement in optoelectronic technologies has sparked significant interest in electrochromic (EC) materials and devices, which are increasingly recognized for their considerable potential in a variety of applications, particularly in next‐generation wearable and portable electronics, electronic papers and billboards, transparent displays, and other innovative display technologies. Key performance metrics such as response time, color stability, and cycling durability must be optimized to meet the rigorous demands of commercial applications. Consequently, the commercialization of high‐quality electrochromic products remains in its nascent stages, with many products still in development or limited to niche markets. This review aims to provide a thorough examination of the latest developments in emerging electrochromic materials and devices that are suitable for potential display applications. The focus will be on two primary types of electrochromic display prototypes: segmented displays, which are characterized by distinct sections that can be individually controlled to display different information, and pixel displays, which offer a more sophisticated approach by allowing for full‐color images and dynamic content through the manipulation of individual pixels. By providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of the field, this review aims to illuminate the progress made in electrochromic technologies and identify the pathways for future research and development that could lead to the successful commercialization of advanced electrochromic display solutions.
