This analysis uncovers the actuation dynamics and wave propagation in Kresling origami metamaterials, indicating innovative applications.
Kresling origami is one of the patterns based on a non-rigid, elastically foldable structure composed of a network of creases. The primary emphasis in this field is on the kinematic analysis of deployment to enhance compactness and explore unique static mechanical properties, such as auxeticity. The main focus is to analyze the actuation mechanism in the static domain, stability, and bifurcations using the Kresling pattern by varying geometric parameters. In this study, we have designed and analyzed a unique tubular material-based multiunit Kresling model, demonstrating the magnetic-driven actuation and segment-wise wave propagation of structures while simultaneously analyzing their static actuation characteristics. We have designed triangulated tubular origami-based metamaterials that enable the strain-softening/hardening characteristics via elastically deformable material-inspired design. To investigate the mechanical properties of triangulated non-rigid Kresling origami-inspired metamaterials with the actuation ability of hard-magnetic active materials, we have used finite element simulation for modeling the Kresling structures and determining the actuation characteristics under axial and rotational conditions. We develop a mathematical model for triangulated 2DOF spring-based Kresling origami. We investigate the magnetic-based deformable Kresling model and solitary wave dynamics in the triangulated Kresling origami metamaterials system. The numerical findings suggest that the Kresling origami structures have excellent potential for creating complex and deployable systems in various engineering applications, including vibration absorption, soft robotics, and medical devices.
