Quantitative analysis shows Brazil's lead in soybean grain trade, highlighting shifts in agricultural policies and competitiveness.
Objective: Investigating the evolution of the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCAI) of Brazil and the USA in the soy complex from 1980 to 2024, considering agricultural policies and productive factors. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on the concept of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCAI), along with theories on international competitiveness, agricultural policies, and commodity trade. Method: A quantitative and descriptive study using RCAI, based on secondary data on soybean (grain, meal, and oil) production and exports from Brazil and the USA between 1980 and 2024. Results and Discussion: Brazil outperformed the USA in RCAI for soybean grain over time, while both countries lost competitiveness in meal and oil. Factors such as production costs, policies, and geography explain the results. Research Implications: The findings provide guidance for public policy and export strategies in agribusiness, especially in the soybean sector and international trade. Originality/Value: The study offers a unique long-term analysis of soybean competitiveness between Brazil and the USA, contributing to agricultural policy and economic literature.
