To reasonably apply longitudinally profiled steel plates in ship structural design, the prescriptive analysis method and cargo hold finite element analysis method were used in this paper. A practical structure design progress of an oil tanker was taken as an example. The prescriptive analysis of hull girder strength, local strength, and bottom slamming strength of the ship was carried out to determine the preliminary design. To ensure the structural safety assessment, the yielding strength and buckling strength of longitudinally profiled steel plates were checked by cargo hold finite element analysis. The results show that the utilization of longitudinally profiled steel plates in specific areas can reduce the structure weight by 4% while satisfying the safety assessment. This paper can provide a reference for other ship structure designs.
