Case study reveals blockchain improves inventory accuracy and reduces losses in the supply chain, highlighting its operational benefits.
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the use of blockchain technology for material traceability in the supply chain of a tape industry. Theoretical Framework: Blockchain technology is used as an infrastructure for smart contracts. Traceability involves the systematic recording of data related to the production, transformation, storage, and movement of items. Method: The methodology adopted for this research comprises quantitative and qualitative research (approach), explanatory research (objectives), and, as for technical procedures, bibliographical and documentary research and case study. Data collection was carried out through observations directly at the manufacturing plant. Results and Discussion: The results obtained revealed an increase in inventory accuracy, a reduction in the average cyclical inventory time, and a reduction in losses due to incorrect movements. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insights into how the results can be applied or influence practices in the field of using blockchain technology on the factory floor. These implications can cover the value chain of the manufacturing industry. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by applying blockchain in the supply chain. The relevance and value of this research are evidenced by demonstrating that the digitalization of shipping with emerging technologies can directly contribute to operational gains and cost reduction.
