This summary outlines several acoustic sensing technologies, highlighting their performance and applications in underwater environments.
Directional acoustic sensing for underwater acoustics applications such as communications and ambient noise monitoring is receiving increased attention. This paper summarizes several approaches we have developed and tested including multimode cylindrical and spherical hydrophones, sparse arrays, compact self-baffled arrays, USBLs, directional acoustic motion sensors (aka vector sensors), and spiral wave beacons. Performance and tradeoffs including frequency response, beam patterns, size, and weight are discussed.
