This study demonstrates increased photocatalytic efficiency in aluminum oxide and stannous oxide composites, indicating enhanced visibility under light.
An efficient photocatalyst based on stannous oxide (SnO 2 ) with varying percentages of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) was synthesized via an economical route. The incorporation of Al 2 O 3 inhibited crystallinity of SnO 2 , as evidenced by broadening of peaks in all ‐ composite samples. This indicates that Al 2 O 3 can alter ‐ crystalline nature of SnO 2 . Pure SnO 2 exhibited a granular morphology in large clusters, whereas the composite samples demonstrated good coupling between ‐ SnO 2 and Al 2 O 3 structures. Furthermore, interparticle voids are seen in both ‐ SnO 2 and the Al 2 O 3 particles. The energy dispersive spectra of ‐ Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanocomposite reveal a high level of purity. Compared with that of ‐ bulk state (>5.0 eV), the band gap of Al 2 O 3 was decreased to 4.1 eV, resulting in a modification in the absorption peak of ‐ composite material to higher wavelengths, as confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. Remarkable photo efficiency was observed under visible light. In comparison to ‐ pure SnO 2 and Al 2 O 3 , the Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 composites exhibited significantly better efficiency. The 3.0% Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 composite showed significant degradation due to the harmonious effect of Al─O─Sn linkages, reduced band gap and interparticle voids. These voids act as active sites facilitating the maximum adsorption of organic dye.
