Observational analysis reveals no correlation between TIL scores and PD-L1 expression in gastric adenocarcinoma, suggesting complex relationships.
Introduction: Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression has been seen to be upregulated in gastric carcinomas (GCs) variably, correlating with the density of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in the individual tumors. Aim: The aim of the study was to study the correlation of TIL score with PD-L1 expression in gastric adenocarcinoma. Materials and Methods: Resected specimens of gastric adenocarcinoma were evaluated for CD3+ and CD8+ TILs/high-power field in the intratumoral (IT) and peritumoral (PT) compartments separately. PD-L1 positivity was assessed using the Tumor Proportion Score (TPS) and Combined Positive Score (CPS). Results: A total of 55 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were studied. PD-L1 positive and negative categories did not significantly correlate with high and low TIL categories in CD3 + and CD8 + groups. However, comparison of the medians of the IT CD3 + and CD8 + , as well as PT CD3 + and CD8 + with PD-L1 (CPS) and PD-L1 (TPS) was statistically significant. Conclusion: TIL and PD-L1 expression may help in identifying potential immunotherapeutic targets for the treatment of GCs and aid in predicting survival.
