Mixed-methods analysis shows significant gaps in calligraphy education in schools, highlighting aesthetic education's role in cultural awareness.
This study is grounded in the policy frameworks of Opinions on Comprehensively Strengthening and Improving Aesthetic Education in Schools in the New Era and the Yunnan Province Three-Year Action Plan for Calligraphy Education in Primary and Secondary Schools (2021–2023). Focusing on the Wuhua District and its surrounding four districts in Kunming City, it adopts a mixed-methods approach (questionnaires, classroom observations, interviews) to explore the current status and challenges of the "hard-pen dominant, brush-pen simplified" calligraphy education model. Key findings include: School Level: There is a significant shortage of specialized teachers (63%), with only 28% of schools in Wuhua District offering school-based curricula. Meanwhile, Guandu District achieved an 18.6% improvement in writing standardization rates by implementing a "required course + grading system" model. Social Level: In Wuhua District, 60% of calligraphy institutions participate in teaching, yet lack formal teacher certification. Chenggong District’s “digital tracing + cultural immersion” model increased students’ cultural awareness by 35%. Family Level: Parents with higher educational backgrounds (68% with bachelor's degrees or above) show a stronger preference for professional institutions (χ²=24.38). Furthermore, each unit increase in household income corresponds to an 18.6% rise in writing standardization rates. Regional Differences: Wuhua District hosts an average of 12 community calligraphy events annually, showing a strong positive correlation (r=0.71) with parents’ cultural heritage awareness. However, there is a significant imbalance between hard-pen writing skills and cultural symbol interpretation abilities (proficiency rate: 89% vs. 35%). To address these issues, this study proposes the “Four-Dimensional Coordination Strategy”: Pedagogical Innovation: Promote a “required course + club activities + digital platform” model and develop a three-dimensional evaluation system focusing on technique, artistry, and philosophy. Resource Integration: Establish a collaboration mechanism among communities, institutions, and schools, and formulate the Yunnan Calligraphy Training Institutions Star Certification Standards. Regional Balance: Build dual demonstration models—Wuhua’s “policy-driven” and Guandu’s “grading-driven”—integrating them into regional education quality monitoring systems. Academic Contribution: This research constructs the first “policy-school-family-society” four-dimensional coordination model, proposing a Cultural Transmission Effectiveness Index (CTEI=0.812), and recommends incorporating it into the localization framework of PISA assessments, thus promoting the modernization of traditional culture education.
