The article presents a vision of the current state of the problem related to the search for ways to improve the physical education and recreation activities of students. The main factors determining the effectiveness of the implementation of an activity-based approach in the process of organizing physical culture and recreation work with students of non-physical education areas of professional training are analyzed. The degree of involvement of students of federal universities in the South of Russia in physical culture and recreation activities and prospects for improving its effectiveness have been determined. The study was conducted on the basis of the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Universities. It was attended by 780 first-year students of non-physical education fields of study. The following research methods were used: theoretical and comparative analysis, survey using Google forms, mathematical processing of research results. As a result of the research, data were obtained that contribute to a deeper substantiation of the close relationship between the natural human need for movement and development and the implementation of the activity component of his somatic (bodily) culture, as well as with cognitive activity aimed at individualizing and personifying the health-improving effects of physical culture and wellness activities. The necessity of updating activities aimed at the development of pedagogical technologies that allow for a higher level of motivation for systematic independent physical exercises with a health-improving orientation is substantiated. It emphasizes the existence of a two-way relationship between motor intelligence and thinking, implemented in a single behavioral act, which, according to the authors, must be taken into account in the technologies of subjectivity development of modern youth. Attention is drawn to the need to comprehensively take into account the personal, social, mental, and psychophysical characteristics of the young generation of the 21st century, as well as modern achievements in human sciences and scientific and technological progress in general, when developing programs aimed at creating a health-improving culture among students, creating effective and environmentally friendly- and the implicit educational space, increasing the role of the cognitive component of physical culture, expanding the infrastructure of the physical culture and recreation space, creating modern university campuses that ensure optimal living conditions, taking into account effective time management technologies.
