This analysis compares operations and training of police tactical teams in different urban centres, highlighting tensions around police militarisation.
Research on Canadian TAC teams assumes the differences across TAC vary between full-time or part-time employment or between municipal, provincial, and federal police services. In the current study, we compare and contrast the similarities and differences between two large-scale police services in Canada, in two different urban centres in two different provinces in Canada. We compare their operations, training, and patrol support functions, and situate our findings to help nuance, agree, but also dispute arguments about police militarisation. In a realm where two police services of similar size and mandates are thought to be similar, we analyse their demarcations to understand how full-time TACs fluctuate on a service-by-service basis and inform pathways for future police practice.
