An observational analysis found that tear film quality and quantity are significantly reduced in chronic renal failure patients, indicating the need for regular ocular assessments.
The aim of the study was to compare the tear film quantity, quality and biochemistry in patient with CRF with healthy controls. The subjects who is already diagnosed with the CRF without diabetes were included. All the procedure was followed by the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki and informed consent was taken. An ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score were noted with the help of questionnaire and ocular examination were done for all the patient. A noninvasive break up time (NIBUT), Schirmer test, invasive break up time(TBUT), and tear fern pattern test were performed. OSDI score was significantly higher (p<0.001) in patient with CRF compare to healthy controls. The value of NIBUT, TBUT, Schirmer test was significantly lower (p<0.001) in CRF patient than healthy controls. The grading of tear fern pattern was significantly higher (p<0.001) CRF patient. It was found that there is a need of periodic ocular examination especially the anterior ocular structure when patient suffering from CRF as they have overall compromised tear profile.
