This article shows Cuban immigrants navigate economic and social relations amid restrictive laws, suggesting an emerging social movement.
This article stresses that the experience of contemporary immigrants, in contrast to the past, is profoundly transnational, as modern forms of communication have qualitatively changed the immigrant experience and enabled immigrants to live their lives routinely across two or more nations; they also, at once, live life in the past and the present. Yet Cuban immigrants have had their transnationalism restricted more than most. Their transnationalism has been restricted by the laws passed by the Cuban government, the laws passed by the US government, and the social pressure that immigrants exert on themselves. Nonetheless, as the article shows, Cuban immigrants have engaged in many transnational relations—economic, political, and social—relationships that are quite important in Cuba at present. In addition, the article considers the question of whether there is now an emergent social movement in Cuba and what its relationship to immigrants living abroad might be.
