Implementation of a risk factor screening checklist identifies increased preeclampsia risk in patients, suggesting low-dose aspirin is beneficial.
The development of preeclampsia can increase maternal morbidity and mortality. Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and other physiological symptoms. Preventing preeclampsia can improve pregnancy outcomes. Low-dose aspirin has been proven to reduce the risk of developing this disorder. A process for the routine use of a risk factor screening checklist was implemented to identify and promptly treat women at risk of preeclampsia. In a maternal–fetal medicine specialty clinic, 18% of all new patients were identified to be at increased risk for preeclampsia and were recommended to start low-dose aspirin.
