Comparative analysis reveals changes in EEG power spectrum in females with alcohol dependence, suggesting brain restructuring after 1 year of abstinence.
Objective. To conduct a comparative analysis of the spectral parameters of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in females at different stages of alcohol remission. Material and methods. Sixty EEGs from female patients diagnosed with alcohol dependence were analyzed. At the time of enrollment in the study, the patients were at different stages of remission: the alcohol-deprivation stage (Group 1), the remission stabilization stage (Group 2), and the established remission stage (Group 3). Results. Statistical analysis of the EEG power spectrum revealed higher values in the alpha range for Group 3 patients in the occipital lead (O1: p=0.011 and p=0.027) and temporal leads (T5: p=0.001 and p=0.012; T6: p=0.022 and p=0.029) compared to Group 1 and Group 2 patients, respectively. Statistically significantly higher values of the power spectrum in the beta range were also found for Group 3 patients in the frontal (F7: p=0.001; F8: p=0.002), parietal (P3: p=0.041; P4: p=0.045 and p=0.043), occipital (O1: p=0.002; O2: p=0.008 and p=0.003), and temporal (T5: p=0.002 and p=0.001; T6: p=0.001 and p<0.001) leads. There were no statistically significant differences in quantitative parameters of EEG power spectrum between Groups 1 and 2 (p>0.05). Conclusion. The results of the comparative analysis indicate a significant restructuring of the functional state of the brain in females only after 1 year of abstinence from alcohol.
