Randomized controlled trial showed improved clinical outcomes in patients with chronic periodontitis, suggesting vitamin E may enhance treatment effects.
A BSTRACT Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of Vitamin E oral supplementation as an adjuvant to scaling and root planing (SRP) in reducing gingival inflammation, clinical attachment loss, and probing pocket depth in generalized chronic periodontitis patients. Materials and Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial. Thirty patients with generalized chronic periodontitis were randomly allocated into either Group A or Group B. In Group A, patients received SRP with chlorhexidine, whereas in Group B, patients received SRP with chlorhexidine and Vitamin E supplementation. Evaluation and comparison of clinical parameters (plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, and papillary bleeding index) of both the groups was assessed at two time intervals: at baseline and at 1 month postoperative. Results: Intragroup analysis showed statistically significant improvement in all parameters in both the groups on comparing between baseline and postoperative ( P ≤ 0.05). Intergroup comparison revealed statistically significant improvement in all parameters between both the groups at 1 month postoperative, demonstrating better improvement in Group B with Vitamin E supplementation than in Group A. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that SRP with Vitamin E supplementation can improve periodontal healing better than SRP with chlorhexidine alone.
