Light trap surveys reveal a new beetle species in Uttarakhand, highlighting the diversity of Rhizotrogini beetles.
Uttarakhand state is rich in biodiversity because of its landscape, and June beetles are also widely distributed in this state. Tribe Rhizotrogini is one of the tribes of June beetles, containing many species of economic importance in different parts of India. However, the diversity and ecology of June beetles are yet to be explored from the state. The possibility of the presence of beetles belonging to the tribe Rhizotrogini was explored by conducting frequent surveys in various localities of Uttarakhand state. The light trap-based survey was conducted in several locations of Uttarakhand during the years 2021 and 2022 for the collection of various chafer beetles to observe the distribution pattern of beetles and their hosts. Among the 35 collected species from different locations of Uttarakhand State, one beetle species, i.e., Pseudopanotrogus lassallei (Keith 2010) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae: Rhizotrogini) is reported for the first time from Uttarakhand. Finally, their taxonomic description was provided, including the male genitalia as the base for taxonomic identification.
