This analysis examines the impact of India's national security concerns on Rohingya refugees, suggesting strategies for desecuritization and human security.
The UNHCR reports that around 4,500 Rohingya were denied entry into India in 2023. This article argues that while the state, the primary referent of national security, has the right to deny entry to those perceived as threats, it is still responsible to the vulnerable. Therefore, the article uses Securitization Theory to examine the balance between the threats posed to the state by the Rohingya refugee influx and the threats faced by these refugees. Drawing on secondary sources, the article concludes that addressing security threats while promoting human security, can facilitate the process of Desecuritization.
