This overview reveals Brazil's biomethane prospects for energy security and economic growth, highlighting barriers to adoption.
The utilization of biomethane as an energy source presents an opportunity for various advancements in the sustainable development of the Brazil and the world. Therefore, this study aims to provide an overview of the Brazilian context regarding the injection of biomethane into gas distribution networks, assess the potential of biomethane use for decarbonizing the energy matrix and other environmental, social and economic benefits, as well as to inform the reader about the challenges faced in making this practice effective and economically viable in the country, while comparing Brazil's situation to other countries that already excel in the commercialization and distribution of biomethane. Although Brazil is relatively behind in the use and production of biomethane, the country is part of the race for sustainability and energy security, and it still has positively effective scenarios concerning the abundance of available raw materials. The benefits of this practice are not limited to the environmental area; it also presents an opportunity for generating new jobs and substantial economic gains for Brazil, with the potential to create positive impacts in the socio-economic sphere and on the overall quality of life of the population. From the reading and analysis conducted throughout this work, it is possible to conclude that Brazil will become one of the world references in the production and utilization of biomethane over the next decade.
