Analysis reports how hot isostatic pressing affects greenhouse gas emissions in the AM industry, suggesting improvements in life cycle analyses.
The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from heavy industry is of great importance to reduce climate impact. In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has been promoted to reduce the amount of material used, leading to reduced carbon footprint. Many of the components produced using AM are post-processed using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) to further improve mechanical performance such as fatigue resistance and ductility. Life Cycle Analyses for AM have so far used generic data for post processing and there is little published on the total AM LCA including post processing operations. This paper will demonstrate how the HIP industry is addressing the need for information with respect to processing of AM components.
