Research reveals enhanced mechanical properties in aluminium matrix composites with modified heat treatments, indicating improved performance for aerospace applications.
This study focuses on optimizing heat treatments for aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) designed for aerospace applications. These advanced materials are reinforced with titanium particles and ceramic phases, which act as grain refiners to improve the alloy’s printability and reduce processing defects. However, their complex microstructure poses challenges for conventional heat treatments like T5 and T6, which often fail to optimize performance. The research explores alternative thermal profiles to enhance precipitate distribution, stabilize grain morphology, and improve mechanical properties. Mechanical characterization, including microhardness measurements and tensile tests, is used to assess strength and reliability. These analyses provide crucial insights into the relationship between heat treatment parameters and the material's performance. The findings demonstrate effective strategies for tailoring heat treatments, enabling superior mechanical properties and durability. This work contributes to the reliable use of AMCs with grain-refining particles in demanding aerospace applications.
