This paper discusses recent changes in radioactive waste classifications, highlighting the need for open discussion on safety measures.
The changes to the criteria for classifying radioactive waste (RW) as special radioactive waste, as enshrined in Government Act No. 1929 «On Amendments to the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of October 19, 2012 No. 1069», are capable of radically influencing established ideas about the safety (in a broad sense) of RW disposal. Such «renovations» are of strategic importance and therefore must be preceded by a representative, open discussion. This paper provides a list of some relevant topics for discussion and presents the authors position on the technology of final isolation of radioactive waste in densely populated regions
