This method quantifies the martensitic phase in hardened steel, suggesting it may improve non-destructive testing practices.
The article is devoted to measuring the result of phase change in steel during surface hardening, since the quantitative ratio of fractions can vary widely. The purpose of this study is to propose and substantiate a new method of non-destructive testing of the profile and depth of the hardened steel layer as a result of surface hardening. A formula is presented that allows calculating the final profile of electrical conductivity (or resistance) in a sample based on the temperature profile with additional consideration of the dependence of electrical resistance on the phase composition. The method can be applied after surface hardening of steel for non-destructive measurement of the profile of the martensitic phase in the surface layer of parts of no small thickness and any shape.
