Ambient gamma dose rate is higher in areas constructed with granite, highlighting health risks, especially for children.
Ambient gamma dose rate was measured in selected walking and playground areas of Galati town, Romania, where various building materials were employed for pavements. The places in which the granite was used in infrastructure construction exhibited the highest gamma doses and cancer risk indices. The effect is even more enhanced in case of measurements registered at 0.5m above the ground, in this way impacting in a large extent the children’s health.
