This analysis reveals antibacterial and antioxidant effects of Grewia schweinfurthii, highlighting its phytochemical components.
Grewia schweinfurthii, a deciduous shrub from the Malvaceae family, has been traditionally used in for treating wound infection, stomach disorder, snake bite, chest pain, and cough and skin diseases. The research aimed to analyse the plant's chemical composition and its effectiveness against antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Different standard methods were employed to screen the phytochemical classes of compounds. Three compounds were isolated from the plant's stem barks and identified as betulin dibenzoate, lauric acid, and 5β-pregnane. The isolated compounds and the plant's crude extracts were tested against bacteria, and crude extracts were tested against oxidative stress. Both the crude extract and isolated compounds demonstrated promising activity against antibacterial activities. The crude extract showed significant antioxidant activity. In general, the results suggest potential for further exploration of G. schweinfurthii chemical constituents and their use in treating bacterial and oxidative stress-related diseases.
