This case report demonstrates dental care challenges in a patient with Crohn's disease, highlighting immunosuppression and surgical timing.
The increasing complexity of patients seen in general dental practice means a multidisciplinary approach to care is often required. This case report explores the management of a 45-year-old woman with Crohn's disease treated with long-term corticosteroid and ustekinumab therapy, highlighting the challenges of immunosuppression and adrenal insufficiency. Through liaison with her medical team, steroid cover and specific timings of dental treatment were implemented to optimize surgical outcomes. This case highlights the importance of tailored, patient-centred care, risk assessment and medical-dental collaboration. As medical advancements continue, dentists must remain well versed and adaptable to ensure safe and effective treatment for complex patients. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Effective dental care for medically complex patients relies on multidisciplinary planning, optimized timing and peri-operative risk management.
