Analysis reveals cortical disparities using MRI to predict outcomes in infants with external hydrocephalus, indicating intervention potential.
Motivation: The study seeks to identify early brain structure differences in infants with external hydrocephalus (EH) to better predict and address developmental delays and adverse outcomes. Goal(s): To determine specific cortical differences using MRI that correlate with benign or poor prognoses in infants with EH. Approach: Utilized cortical reconstruction and quantification through MRI imaging to compare cortical thickness, surface area, volume, and curvature in infants with benign versus poor outcomes. Results: Infants with poor prognoses showed reduced cortical volume and surface area in regions vital for motor and language functions compared to those with benign outcomes. Impact: Early MRI detection of cortical differences in EH infants can guide interventions to prevent developmental delays.
