Clinical study shows low-intensity TUS improves depression symptoms in patients, indicating a novel non-invasive approach for mental health.
Motivation: Transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (TUS) which offers a higher resolution potentially allows for more targeted neuromodulation. Goal(s): This study aimed to explore the potential of low-intensity TUS to precisely target the brain under MR guidance for safe and effective treatment of depression. Approach: A clinical study was conducted in 20 patients, with neuropsychological assessments and functional MRI scans. All patients underwent TUS on BA 46 of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for 10 days. Results: Results demonstrated that TUS significantly improved depression, anxiety scores, as well as sleep quality, and mood improvement was closely related to functional connectivity changes. Impact: This study introduces a non-invasive MR-guided ultrasound therapy that effectively alleviates depression symptoms, marking a significant step forward in mental health treatment.
