Python-based MRI scanner control improves image analysis integration and pulse sequence development.
Motivation: There is limited availability of open MRI control software for research scanners. Access to RF calibrations, shims, eddy-current-compensation; modification of RF/gradient waveforms; and nonstandard pulse sequence modifications is often difficult. Goal(s): Develop open research-friendly MRI control software that integrates non-MRI hardware control and seamlessly integrates with Python image analysis. Approach: A Python console wrapper was built on Tecmag TNMR to control a 3T preclinical scanner. A library of standard imaging sequences was constructed to run high-dimensional acquisitions for qMRI. Results: The Python code provided simple but comprehensive control of a preclinical research scanner with capabilities exceeding the original, now defunct, Java-based system. Impact: The open Python console wrapper will allow easier development of new pulse sequences, assessment of MRI-measurement biases, better integration of the scanner with other required hardware, and provide a simple path to Python-based image processing.
