Experimental analysis evaluated bulk motion's impact on DENSE scans in the brain, suggesting effective correction methods.
Motivation: Due to sub-millimeter displacement encoding, DENSE scans in the brain are highly sensitive to patient bulk motion. Goal(s): Our goals were to evaluate both the impact of bulk motion on DENSE scans in the brain, and to what extent we can mitigate the effects of this motion in post-processing. Approach: 2D DENSE scans were acquired with and without induced motion, at 3 axial slice positions in the brain. Results: Bulk motion has a significant impact on DENSE displacement measures. However, the motion correction methods implemented effectively corrected for patient bulk motion and demonstrated repeatability in test-retest analysis. Impact: DENSE scans with and without induced motion were acquired, to evaluate and correct the effects of patient bulk motion. Our motion correction methods were effective in correcting for both rotational and translational bulk motion and demonstrated repeatability in test-retest analysis.
