Analysis reveals a multifaceted SWM atlas connecting seven functional areas, suggesting vast potential for research.
Motivation: Superficial white matter (SWM) is the short association fiber located beneath the gray matter, connecting adjacent cortex gyri. SWM has been shown to correlate significantly with various brain functions. However, the need for SWM datasets limits the advancement of related research. Goal(s): We aim to provide the most detailed SWM atlas based on functional parcellation in the current stage. Approach: We selected and evaluated SWM fibers from 171 high-quality diffusion MRI subjects from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) 7T dataset. Results: We generated a finely clustered SWM atlas with around 680 categories connecting seven different functional areas. Impact: This research offers the most detailed segmented multifaceted SWM atlas currently available in the existing literature, which provides future researchers with a high-quality data resource for studying the structure and function of SWM, thereby further deepening our understanding of SWM.
