Quantitative susceptibility mapping evaluates iron and myelin variations in subcortical regions of MDD patients, indicating potential diagnostic advancements.
Motivation: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is associated with abnormalities in subcortical structures involved in emotion regulation and reward processing, though the specific causes remain unclear. Goal(s): This study aims to evaluate susceptibility changes in subcortical regions to differentiate MDD patients from healthy controls. Approach: QSM-ARCS was used to separate paramagnetic (iron) and diamagnetic (myelin) sources in susceptibility maps, allowing detailed analysis of subcortical regions. Results: Significant group differences were observed in positive and negative susceptibility associated with iron and myelin changes in the MDD group, highlighting abnormalities in subcortical regions. Impact: QSM-ARCS revealed iron and myelin changes in the subcortical structures of MDD, deepening understanding of MDD pathophysiology and highlighting its potential to advance future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
