Assessment using dual-frequency MRE shows high accuracy for renal injury in cirrhosis patients, indicating potential improvements in diagnosis.
Motivation: Simultaneous dual-frequency 3D magnetic resonance elastography (Sd-3D MRE) can acquire data at two frequencies in one acquisition, which may be useful for the diagnosis and monitoring of renal impairment Goal(s): To assess the performance of a Sd-3D MRE technique for detecting renal injury in patients with cirrhosis Approach: Sd-3D MRE was used to obtain multiple parameters reflecting kidney tissue mechanical properties to evaluate renal injury Results: MRE-measured renal stiffness (RS) at 60Hz and 120Hz showed excellent diagnostic performance for distinguishing HRS patients from non-HRS patients (AUC=0.888 and 0.925, respectively). RS at 120Hz also effectively differentiated non-HRS renal insufficiency patients from healthy controls (AUC=0.762). Impact: Simultaneous dual-frequency 3D MRE can differentiate HRS in patients with advanced chronic liver disease and can distinguish renal injury before the onset of HRS and shorten the acquisition time.
