This study quantifies B0 field distortions caused by hip implants in prostate MRI, suggesting solutions like DC shim coils to improve imaging.
Motivation: Hip implants can cause significant B0 field inhomogeneities, which lead to artifacts in MRI, particularly impacting prostate imaging quality. Goal(s): This study aims to quantify the B0 field distortion caused by hip implants in prostate MRI to improve imaging outcomes. Approach: Using 33 CT-based human voxel models with detailed hip prosthesis designs, we calculated demagnetization fields and frequency shifts at 3 Tesla using the dipole method and Fast Fourier Transform. Results: Hip implants increase frequency shifts and standard deviations in the B0 field within the prostate —about -600 Hz with a 175 Hz standard deviation —even though the prostate is 10 centimeters from the implant. Impact: This study provides insights into mitigating B0 field distortions from hip implants, suggesting that solutions like DC shim coils could be employed to counteract susceptibility-induced artifacts in prostate MRI.
