MRI methods detect myelin loss and iron accumulation in Huntington's Disease, suggesting diagnostic potential.
Motivation: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by myelin damage and iron accumulation. Robust detection of myelin and iron is critical. Goal(s): To apply a series of MRI techniques to detect myelin and iron changes in HD. Approach: A 3D Short TR Adiabatic Inversion Recovery UTE (STAIR-UTE) sequence for Myelin Proton Fraction (MPF) mapping, UTE Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (UTE-QSM) sequence for iron mapping, divided Subtracted Inversion Recovery (dSIR) sequence for morphological imaging, and synthetic MRI have been applied to HD (n=7) and control (n=7) population. Results: People with HD show significant myelin loss in white matter and iron accumulation in gray matter over control subjects. Impact: The STAIR-UTE, UTE-QSM and dSIR techniques can detect myelin loss, iron accumulation, and morphological changes in HD, respectively, and may help with early diagnosis and treatment monitoring of HD.
