Comprehensive analysis enhances geosteering and reservoir modeling in the mauddud formation, suggesting improved completion strategies.
Development efforts of Mauddud formation, a semi-unconventional reservoir has historically been challenging due to its tight reservoir properties and heterogeneous nature, in addition to its relatively narrow thickness in the Greater Burgan Area. (W. H. Al-Bazzaz, 2006) A comprehensive FDP study using combined geological and reservoir data at borehole to reservoir scale was conducted to optimize well placement, following which, two horizontal wells were successfully drilled. The wells were designed with lateral lengths ranging from 1600 to 1800 ft. of measured depth, considering the production sensitivity to lateral length. The wells were strategically set to be positioned in Mauddud reservoir within 15 ft. below its top. To ensure the effective achievement of the well objectives, a comprehensive assessment of technology selection was conducted to enable optimal data acquisition for seamless geosteering as well as well evaluation and integration into the fracturing design and continuously updating the static model along the lateral sections. The multi-depth high-definition detection boundary (deep azimuthal resistivity bed boundary) was deployed along with the high-resolution resistivity imaging and combined with 3D sonic Imaging to achieve the objectives. The advanced technology used allowed for detailed attribute analysis, facilitating an in-depth evaluation of possible permeability and production drivers within the complex formation beyond the conventional frameworks. Structural analysis coupled with identification and quantification of rock fabric properties and diagenetic overprint was successfully performed, and the detailed insights were further integrated with the 3D sonic imaging to model the spatial distribution of these features and their possible lateral continuity within the reservoir, aiming to identify potential enhancements in reservoir modeling worflows as well as optimization of completion and stimulation strategies. The wells were completed with multi-stage acid frac, and the preliminary results of the DST were promising, further leveraging the success of the borehole analysis and the revised FDP study. The advancement in Logging-while-drilling coupled with state-of-the-art wireline technology has facilitated precise geosteering in addition to generating high-resolution data essential for refining reservoir models as well as efficient and informed future placement strategies.
