This review discusses emotion detection technologies using deep learning in classrooms, suggesting improvements for adaptive learning systems.
Emotions play a fundamental role in shaping learners’ attention, motivation, and academicperformance, making emotion-aware technologies vital for adaptive digital education. Recentadvancements in affective computing and deep learning have enabled real-time recognition ofstudent emotions using multimodal inputs such as facial expressions, speech, and text. This surveyreviews state-of-the-art approaches, with particular emphasis on hybrid deep learning frameworksthat integrate convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for spatial representation, recurrent neuralnetworks (RNNs) for temporal dynamics, and transformer-based architectures with attention-drivenmultimodal fusion. The integration of these models has significantly improved the accuracy androbustness of emotion recognition in educational contexts. Furthermore, the paper discussesprogress in embedding emotion recognition within adaptive feedback systems, thereby facilitatingpersonalized and responsive learning experiences. Despite these advances, several challengesremain, including latency, scalability, limited dataset diversity, and privacy concerns, which hinderlarge-scale deployment in real-world classrooms. Future research directions include thedevelopment of lightweight neural architectures, explainable AI techniques, and privacy-preservingmethods to ensure ethical and reliable adoption. This work provides a comprehensive foundation forthe advancement of real-time, emotion-aware adaptive learning systems in education.
