This analysis demonstrates fatigue life prediction in ball screws, indicating significant reductions under increased rack force.
This article presents elastic contact analysis and fatigue life prediction for ball screws in automotive rack-type electronic power steering (REPS) systems. An elastic contact model is constructed based on Hertzian contact theory to calculate contact stress and deformation, verified by a multi-ball finite element model in ABAQUS. A fatigue life formula is derived and validated through finite element simulation and experiments. Parametric studies show that the fatigue life is reduced by 66.7% (49.3%) when the rack force (rack travel) increases from 10 kN (100 mm) to 30 kN (200 mm). This work establishes a comprehensive methodology for fatigue life prediction of REPS ball screws.
