Algorithm improves texture coordinate prediction in 3D mesh, suggesting better compression efficiency.
In this paper, we describe a strategy to efficiently predict the texture coordinates for 3D mesh compression. Several prediction algorithms were proposed to utilize the conformality of texture coordinates caused by parameterization. Since the geometric properties of the mesh surface play a crucial role in texture coordinate prediction, we first explore the impact of different dihedral angles of adjacent geometric triangles to texture coordinate prediction and propose a strategy that switches to suitable algorithm for better prediction. For implementation and evaluation, we used the reference software and the test dataset from Static Polygonal Mesh Coding technology organized by the Volumetric Visual Media Working Group of the Alliance for Open Media. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy achieves an average compression gain 0.18% in the lossless coding of texture coordinates.
