Numerical simulation reveals how hydrogen-doped materials affect sealing performance in ball valves, indicating potential concerns for natural gas pipelines.
In hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines, hydrogen has stronger diffusivity and corrosivity to materials than natural gas. Non-metallic sealing materials are generally used at the valve seat of pipeline valves, and hydrogen will cause different degrees of aging to non-metallic materials. Therefore, it may adversely affect the sealing performance of key equipment, such as natural gas pipeline valves. This paper establishes a numerical simulation model of the valve seat sealing structure for the common all-welded ball valves in natural gas pipelines. The aging performance data of PEEK and PTFE non-metallic sealing materials obtained by hydrogen aging experiments are used to study the aging of sealing materials under different hydrogen conditions. The influence of sealing material on the sealing performance of the ball valve is explored, and the impact of hydrogen doping on the contact stress distribution of the ball valve is explored, which provides a reference for the optimization of non-metallic sealing materials for hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline valves.
