Survey finds teachers emphasize the necessity of counseling and vocational guidance in intercultural schools, indicating its importance for diverse student backgrounds.
Guidance and vocational guidance (SyEP) is placed in the broader context of the institutional infrastructure of public schools and of intercultural schools in particular. The institution of SyEP is considered to be equally broad, important and manifold for the individual student as well as for the school context and the social environment. This has led to the conduct of this survey which put under examination the views of teachers who teach in Intercultural Schools of Secondary Education; the results of this investigation underline the importance of implementing Counselling and Vocational Guidance in these schools. This scientific research was conducted between October and December 2017 with the participation of 47 Intercultural school educators (both from Junior High school and High School of Sapes) from the broader region of Thrace. The results show that teachers agree on the fact that the application of Counselling and Vocational Guidance in Intercultural Schools is of significant importance and undisputable necessity. This is mainly due to the fact that the students of these schools come from different contexts (economic, social, religious, cultural). Thus, they are inclined not to know the Greek language adequately enough so as to perform successfully at school. The majority of them is also ignorant of the difficult living conditions, labor problems and hence the professions that are in demand under these adverse economic circumstances. Thus, the need to help students develop positive attitudes towards others, towards school and society in general along with skills associated with critical thinking, collaboration and communication becomes more mandatory than ever and it will therefore facilitate their self-development through the implementation of SyEP.
