The study reveals hand sanitizers' efficacy against bacteria in various community groups, suggesting improved hygiene practices.
BACKGROUND: Hands serve as the essential source of germ transmission and considered as the foremost infectious portion of the body; therefore, hand cleanliness is extremely significant to diminish the growth of microbes. METHODS: The samples were collected from 27 volunteers of different community (poor, middle, and posh class) through cotton swab in a nutrient broth tube. Swab technique was used to isolate the hand surface bacteria, and the antibiotic profiling of the isolates was checked through disc diffusion method. After that, well diffusion method was used to observe the efficacy of hand sanitizers against the isolated pathogens. RESULTS: Staphylococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) , and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were identified from the samples. Antibiotic resistant pattern was observed against the isolates where V. cholerae was resistant to doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin, and ceftriaxone; Staphylococcus spp. was resistant to cefixime, ciprofloxacin, and doxycycline; E. coli was resistant to oxacillin, nitrofurantoin, ceftriaxone, and ampicillin; Klebsiella spp. was slightly resistant to polymyxin and colistin. On the contrary, efficacy of alcohol-based sanitizer (Acnol and SafeLife) and herbal sanitizer (Neem and Yusera) were found to be estimated up to 30 mm indicated as zone of inhibition. CONCLUSION: The use of disinfectants such as hand sanitizers are important in avoiding the transmission of infectious diseases within the different community of individuals. In order to reduce the rate of illnesses caused by bacterial transmission, the current findings would inspire the community, social workers, nongovernmental organizations, and public health concern department regarding the necessity of maintaining the proper hygienic practices.
