Taxonomic review identifies 36 new species in Spatulosia and reclassifies taxa in genus Eugoa, suggesting significant biodiversity.
The Afrotropical taxa included in the genus Eugoa Walker, 1858 are transferred into the genus Spatulosia Toulgoët, 1965 and reviewed. Six new combinations and a new synonymy are introduced: Spatulosia africana (Hampson, 1900), comb. n., Spatulosia coronaria (Kühne, 2007), comb. n., Spatulosia quilimanensis (Strand, 1922), comb. n., Spatulosia gablerinus (Kühne, 2008), comb. n., Spatulosia gemina (Hampson, 1914), comb. n. (= Eugoa winneba Kühne, 2007, syn. n.), and Spatulosia corniculata (Kühne, 2007), comb. n. A neotype is designated for Nudaria quilimanensis Strand, 1922. Thirty-six new species are described from mainland Africa: S. odzala sp. n., S. mzuzu sp. n., S. mandibula sp. n., S. tenebrosa sp. n., S. carbonisata sp. n., S. nimba sp. n., S. usambara sp. n., S. bokwaongo sp. n., S. pringlei sp. n., S. fuscostriata sp. n., S. zambia sp. n., S. kingstoni sp. n., S. banco sp. n., S. wologizi sp. n., S. bispinata sp. n., S. clavata sp. n., S. smithi sp. n., S. biungulata sp. n., S. capriolina sp. n., S. obscura sp. n., S. nouabaleana sp. n., S. similis sp. n., S. lobo sp. n., S. maputo sp. n., S. makao sp. n., S. elegans sp. n., S. subtilis sp. n., S. ivindo sp. n., S. exilis sp. n., S. mondika sp. n., S. pallescens sp. n., S. curta sp. n., S. bilobata sp. n., S. cristata sp. n., S. trapezia sp. n., and S. nola sp. n. Two species-group taxa originally described in Eugoa are transferred to the Nolidae genus Selepa Moore, 1858: Selepa costiplaga (Holland, 1893), comb. n. and Selepa tropicalis (Holland, 1893), comb. n. Adults and male and female genitalia of the Afrotropical taxa of the genus Spatulosia as well as the type species of the Asian Eugoa and the related Neoeugoa N. Singh & Kirti, 2016 are illustrated.
