Entomological surveys reveal a new species of the genus Aphonoides, highlighting its unique genital morphology.
During recent entomological surveys in Guangxi Province, China, a new species (Aphonoides hippocrepis sp. nov. Ma) of tree cricket belonging to the genus Aphonoides Chopard, 1940 (Orthoptera: Oecanthidae) was discovered. The genus Aphonoides, currently comprising 75 species with seven recorded in China, is characterized by slender brown bodies and arboreal habits. The new species, distinguished primarily by male genital morphology, is described and illustrated herein. The new species closely resembles Aphonoides medvedevi Gorochov, 1985 and Aphonoides rufescens Ichikawa, 2001 in the general structure of the epiphallus and ectoparamere. However, it can be distinguished by the features of (1) the lateral lobe of the epiphallus is horseshoe-shaped in lateral view; (2) the ectoparamere exhibits a dorsally protruding, blunt apex and a ventrally sharper apex.
