Numerical analysis evaluates ignition probabilities of sustainable aviation fuels and RP-3 jet fuel, suggesting fuel properties impact performance.
In this study, the ignition performance of two sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), designated B-1 and C-1, along with the Chinese RP-3 jet fuel, was numerically examined under engine cold-start conditions. B-1 and C-1 are derived from Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) and Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) processes, respectively. A three-dome linear low-emission combustor was utilized to delineate the inter-dome flame propagation dynamics. The ignition characteristics were evaluated based on the ignition probabilities at global equivalence ratios ranging from 0.2 to 0.5, as computed by a cellular automaton algorithm integrated with a stochastic particle tracking approach. The findings revealed that RP-3 exhibited the highest ignition probability, with C-1 being intermediate and B-1 showing the lowest probability. Subsequent analysis of fuel properties indicated that the atomization quality correlated most closely with ignition probability.
