Analysis reveals community perceptions of economic and environmental impacts of oil palm plantations.
The existence of oil palm plantations has an impact on the economic, social and environmental impacts of the surrounding community. Community perceptions can provide a foundation for managing oil palm plantations sustainably. This study aims to assess community perceptions regarding the social, economic, and environmental impacts of oil palm plantations in PT. GTA. Data collection involved structured interviews with questionnaires and field observations. The research results show that the majority of people have a positive perception of oil palm plantations in PT GTA. Community perception of environmental impacts, the community agrees (75.3%) that oil palm plantations do not damage the peat ecosystem, suitable as a wildlife habitat (63.86%), and does not use slash and burn methods (49.4%). A neutral response was given to aspects of air quality and clean water supply. Social impact, the community is neutral towards PT GTA’s contribution to education and relations between citizens, although 45.18% agree that the company plays a role in community empowerment. The economic impact has a positive perception, especially regarding increasing employment opportunities and household income.
