Evaluating bridge safety assessments reveals vulnerabilities in current methods, suggesting enhanced monitoring frameworks.
The collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden, Germany, in September 2024 has highlighted notable vulnerabilities in our current approach to bridge safety assessment. This incident underscores the need for more testing and structural health monitoring frameworks that can effectively account for the complex dynamic loads and environmental factors acting on critical infrastructure rather than standard techniques. This study discusses lessons learned from the Carola Bridge collapse, highlighting the limitations of past methods and the potential of next generation testing and monitoring techniques. By evaluating these approaches, it is aimed to enhance the comprehensive understanding of structural behaviour of the bridge and improve predictive capabilities. Taking account of the Carola Bridge incident, we highlight the need for more integrated frameworks that could increase the accuracy and effectiveness of bridge safety assessments.
