Performance characterization reveals improved point spread function in the NewATHENA x-ray optic, indicating readiness for future observatories.
With the transformation of ATHENA into the NewATHENA mission, cutting-edge Silicon Pore Optics (SPOs) have evolved to meet the stringent requirements of future space-based observatories. During the redefinition phase, SPO technology was significantly improved, leading to the creation of the first mirror modules that fully meet the NewATHENA design, with precise dimensions, rib spacing, and coatings. In 2024, these NewATHENA SPOs underwent detailed performance characterization, including measurements of the half-energy widths of the on- and off-axis point spread function, at the PANTER x-ray test facility of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. Additionally, effective area assessments were conducted across the energy range relevant to NewATHENA. This work presents a comparison of results obtained before and after the thermal test from campaigns conducted in December 2023 and November 2024, focusing on SPO MM-0058, the first representative NewATHENA row-08 mirror module.
