This case highlights cryptococcosis complications in a White-eyed parakeet, revealing implications for avian health.
The present study reports the occurrence of cryptococcosis in a male captive specimen of White-eyed parakeet (Psittacara leucophthalmus) which initially presented mild signs of respiratory disease, evolving to the loss of rhinoteca. Due to the clinical complication and the difficulty of maintaining life quality for the bird, the owner opted for euthanasia, authorizing necroscopic analysis. Histopathological examination revealed tissue necrosis, multifocal presence of granulomas in the maxilla and nasal sinuses with the presence of encapsulated yeasts (disseminated). By the structures, the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans was observed, being verified through microbiological analysis in the lesions. Avian cryptococcosis is an uncommon disease in birds, consisting in a problem restricted to immunosuppressed individuals. It was verified that the reported bird maintained contact with Columba livia, a species recognized as reservoir of the pathogen. This is the first case of cryptococcosis described in Psittacara leucophthalmus and the second case involving a Brazilian species.
